Quality Assurance Process Improvement

Eddy current inspection of high stress turbine engine parts can find micro-fractures that are too small to be found with traditional dye inspection techniques. As operational stresses continually increase on these parts, the inspection standards must also be continually refined. Major users of this inspection process needed a way to refine the standards in a way that related to real-world use of the parts. Their idea was to study the data already produced by their eddy current inspection systems. The problem was that these systems were designed as Pass/Fail systems with no way to store the data to reuse it for analysis of the process.

Part Inspection ISTL worked closely with the inspection system vendor to augment their product with the InfoScribe™ data management system. The results achieved are productivity improvement of the user’s shop, enhanced in-house inspection error analysis and multi-terabyte inspection data capacity for inspected part analysis. The inspection data analysis through data mining is being used to enhance component life predictions. Simulated re-inspection uses the same data to drive refinement of the inspection process.
