Plating Process Improvement

A plating company had quality and scrap problems with a process that needed constant monitoring and restarting of electric arcs. The electric arcs are used to blast very hard material into a plasma which would then plate onto customer parts. The arcs dance randomly around their targets as lightning. The problem was that the arcs often dance off their targets and extinguish. Occasionally, an arc would fail to extinguish and damage the plating equipment.

ISTL installed sensors at key locations to monitor the process with its InfoScribe™ data management system. Proper operation is now tracked and automatic arc restarts are performed whenever needed to prevent loss of quality of the plated parts.

"InfoScribe control of our cathodic-arc
plating reduced the man-hours needed for
monitoring that process and saves us thousands
of dollars per month in re-work costs."
