Laboratory Process Improvement

Pulsed Laser Deposition is used to form very thin alternating layers of diamond-like carbon and compliant carbon materials. This thin layered film can serve as a dry lubricant for severe environments such as satellite bearings. The problem was that the alternating deposition process worked poorly because of the many parameters to monitor and control at high laser blasting speed.

PLD_blast ISTL applied its InfoScribe™ data management technology with custom instrument interfaces to this process. High-speed spectral data collected from the laser blast was seamlessly integrated with the millisecond precise control adjustments. The result achieved was multiple uniform layers of diamond-like carbon with the required hardness and toughness for long bearing life. The PLD control process was so successful that it received two U.S. patents: US Pat. 5612887, Automation of PLD, and US Pat. 5535128, Hierarchical control of PLD.
