Composites Process Improvement

A composites company had excessive scrap in their carbon composite rod pultrusion process. These rods were formed with carbon yarns and resin and pulled through an extrusion die to give them a square cross-section. However, the lay of the carbon yarns to each other would often cause the yarns to twist the shape of the rods which would spoil their use in the end product.

ISTL installed its InfoScribe™ data management system along with sensors at key locations to continuously monitor the carbon rod square cross-section. Square rod distortion is now promptly detected and cut early from the rod pultrusion process. The benefit is automatic tracking of rod quality with 60% reduction in waste. Lost time due to distorted rods in the assembly line is eliminated.
